This painting is part of my graduation project "Schaduwkamers":
Since the Enlightenment, the Western concept of humanity has focused on rationality, yet a large part of our psyche is subconscious. The subconscious is a source of information, housing the unknown aspects of the self, from suppressed emotions to drives and fears.
With “Schaduwkamers”, I aim to give space to this part of the self and attempt to depict it in a series of paintings, despite its chaos and elusiveness. Inspired by Carl G. Jung and Sigmund Freud, I reduce this chaos to a symbolic structure, aiming to evoke recognition between the artwork and the viewer’s subconscious.
